Sleep Program of the Department of Medicine

As the sleep program of the Department of Medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, the Cardiopulmonary Sleep and Ventilatory Disorders Center insures that all consultations, sleep study planning, test interpretations, and treatment interventions and recommendations for patients occur with physicians who are expert in the specialties of internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine. Patients are seen and studied in a center maintaining state- of- the- art clinical and research protocols in cardiopulmonary disorders of sleep, and the treatment of these disorders. The sleep center maintains close collaboration with a wide base of expert clinicians and researchers within the Columbia University Medical Center community, including the lung failure center, the heart failure center, the lung transplant service, the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig ALS/MDA center, rehabilitation medicine, and the School of Dentistry.

The Center is directed by Robert C. Basner, M.D. Dr. Basner, board certified in the specialties of internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine, is a nationally recognized clinician, researcher, and educator in sleep medicine and physiology, with a particular interest and expertise in ventilatory control and cardiopulmonary interactions during sleep.
